I Am My Biggest Asset: Health According to Styles P

Ever since I heard about Styles P, one of Hip Hop's greats, opening up his own juice bar in the Bronx, I've had nothing but love and support for him and his whole movement. As of recently, many people within the Black community have been falling victim to many health problems that have led to sickness and even death (Rick Ross, Heavy D, Patrice O'Neal, Etta James etc.). And I find it very important that we become more aware in the year of 2012 that we are not getting any younger, that no one is invincible to anything, and that it is never too late to become more healthy.

In this video, Styles drops some major jewels about why it is important to maintain a healthy and positive lifestyle by eating right and exercising on a regular. Its great to see one of our brothers stepping up to the plate to educate the people about this topic.

Black History Month Fact #1: African Brazil

Welcome to Black History Month and the wonderful month of February!

I hope you all are ready for the amazing things that this month has to offer and looking forward to celebrating Black History Month. Throughout the month, I hope to make several posts about different facts related to Black history, from a national and global perspective.

Today's fact:
Did you know that the country Brazil has the largest African population out of all of the countries that African slaves were shipped to?

Many may assume that the Americas would have the largest population (as I did), but Brazil was the first country that the Europeans shipped a large amount of African slaves to.

Bahia, Brazil is a very historical state in Brazil that has the largest population of Afro-Brazilians. And what is so interesting about the people of African decent in Bahia (and throughout Brazil) is that many traditions and pieces of African history and heritage that were brought over to Brazil has been preserved for hundreds of years by them. The African deities of the Yoruba people of West Africa are still worshiped by a large percentage of Afro-Brazilians and throughout time, these deities were combined with different saints and parts of Christianity (the religion of the Europeans/slave masters) and is called Candomblé. This religion is practiced by many Afro-Brazilians.

Carnival is also a special celebration that has been celebrated in Salvador, Bahia and Rio De Janero for years. It is a fusion of music, dancing and extravagant costumes that has made Brazil widely recognized around the world. Although this celebration originated in Europe, it became widely practiced in Latin America and the Caribbean. In Brazil, it is has most definitely been kept alive through the efforts, spirits and traditions of Afro-Brazilians.

Amazing information, right? This is why I love history, especially, Black history! I hope you all enjoyed the fact of the day. And lastly, don't ever let ANYONE try to tell you your history, this is OUR STORY.

D'Angelo is BACK!!!

As I am writing this post, just hearing D'Angelo's video play in the other tab has got me emotional (no lie). Remember last year when I featured one of his vintage Voodoo photos as Photo of the Week and I asked where has he been? Well, there is no need to long for our soul brother, because he is back!!!

The internet has been set ablaze ever since videos have begun to surface of D'Angelo's live performance in Stockholm, Sweden, where he has kicked off his European tour. This is his first live performance in over a decade and he looks and sounds better than ever. Just to see an actual band play and sound so funky should put any Soul music lover into a daze, not to mention, he and his background singers sound out of sight!

According to many sites and music blogs, he performed tunes from his earlier albums; as well as, new songs from his forthcoming LP entitled, James River. Can't wait to hear more from D'Angelo, can we all say American Tour Coming Soon??? Let's keep our fingers crossed!

The Beauty of Stillness and Silence

There is an ounce of beauty in all things. No matter what society teaches us, we can learn and be inspired by anything that we see and experience in life. As I continue to mature, I have realized that one of the Universe's greatest gifts is silence. And I know that this may sound funny to many of you out there, but think about it... When was the last time that you really sat down by yourself with no T.V. on, the laptop shutdown, and the phone turned off and you just indulged in the sound of SILENCE.

This is very hard to do in our society because we are so used to having a daily routine and I am learning that as people (and functioning humans) we MUST learn how to do this more in order to live a more balanced and clarified life. So I created a video talking about this a little bit, just to share my thoughts about what I have learned by practicing this in my life.

Artist Profile: Key

Key is an amazingly talented artist born and currently based in Brooklyn, NY. She has been singing ever since she could remember, as she was greatly influenced by her mother and sisters whom sung and worked out harmonies when she was a child growing up. It is honestly no surprise that her musical upbringing has led her to becoming one of the most eclectic and original singers that I have come across.

Key's songs, mostly all written by her, are full of life, wisdom and love. She is also prolific in the sense that her lyrics sit deep within your soul, almost as much as her voice, which is mellow, yet so powerful. Her song entitled, "Storm", exemplifies this as she asks;

"What time is your storm? Will you feel it too? Gaining momentum, destroying, all that you thought were the essential pieces of you."

Key really designs a song as her own with her voice, whether it be a jazz standard or R&B cut, she owns it.

What I also love about Key is her style. It is very rare that you see many artists nowadays that exude individuality as she does. Very classic and chic, she is slightly reminiscent of a young Diana Ross within her photos; playful and very intriguing. But all the while, her music is what really draws people in.

Key lived in Japan around 2001 and actually released an album their entitled, Thoughts From Key, and soon moved back to the States. Since then, she has been creating a name for herself as a solo act performing at different venues in New York; such as, the Blue Note Jazz Club and also performing background vocals for other artists. But what would be awesome is if she released an album this year, I am so ready for that! When you listen to songs like, "Deep Green" and her remix to J-Dilla & The Roots "Antiquity", you cannot help but to wonder what other kind of musical magic she has up her sleeve.

RIP Etta James and Winston Riley

It saddens me to report that Ms. Etta James and Mr. Winston Riley passed. Two musical greats that really left a true mark on the music world. Etta James had been battling Leukemia and to get her health back for years. A couple weeks ago, she had just been released from the hospital and all of her fans were hoping for a speedy recovery. She was such a powerhouse when it came to singing. I will never forget when my friend in college played "I'd Rather Go Blind" for me, I was blown away by the soul and pain in her voice. Nobody could SANG like Ms. Etta James.

And Winston Riley is a legend in his own right. As the founding member of the Reggae group, The Techniques, and producing for the likes of Buju Banton, Super Cat and many more, Riley's work has made a huge impact on Reggae music and its evolution throughout the years.

Salute to both of these amazing artists, we will never forget their contribution to Black culture worldwide.

I tend to relate a lot to Capricorns as they are very powerful, yet emotional people that have amazing ways of conveying messages to people. And Mary is NO exception to this. The reason why she has been able to have so much longevity in the music industry is because of this. A true innovator and diva in her own right, all salute the Queen!

I hated hearing people of other ethnicities making comments like this in high school. Or, "Oh, My God! Can I touch your hair?". I heard comments and phrases like this all throughout my matriculation in high school, which was a predominately white, all girl school.

It is very uncomfortable to say the least to have a white person ask you about using the "N word" and hearing them sing a rap song assuming that you like the song and in hopes that it would make them look more cool (so corny). So to see Chescaleigh decide to make a video about typical things that white girls say to black girls is so spot on for me. Now that I look back at it, it is actually very hilarious to see that so many other Black girls have experienced this. Some may find this video offensive, but if you have never experienced this then you wouldn't understand.

I love how Chesca does this in a very tasteful manner. It's as if she is bringing awareness to this topic in a very comical/satire manner. I love it.

Figures of Neon: Abdi Farah

The work of Abdi Farah has inspired me ever since I saw him on Bravo's premiere of their amazing show, Work of Art. After watching the first episode, he immediately became my favorite artist on the show. Not only did I love the fact that he was an African American male showcasing his gift and raw talent to the world, but his art was extraordinary. And so are these neon figures that he created.

Known for his many imaginative sculptures, Abdi shines when it comes to creating life size and small figures that are very intriguing to the eye. And I must say, as a person that loves fluorescent colors, I found these plastic human-shaped figures to be so cool. I can honestly say that I cannot tell whether they are done being cleaned up or not, either way around, I think they are awesome.

Abdi's art is truly one of a kind and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for his fans for the year of 2012. We shall definitely see, but in the meanwhile, I will continually look at these creations in neon amazement.

And The "Video of The Year" Award Goes To...

Yes, people, this duo has done it again! For those of you that follow my blog, you may remember the album review and video that I did talking about their debut LP, Black Up, which was released in June. Since then, they have been touring, doing a few interviews and staying under the radar (as usual). But low and behold, an official video entitled Black Up has been released by Sub Pop Records and it is the epitome of greatness.

This video is more like a short film to me. It is full of many different elements and it is like they are trying to tell an urban story. It is actually very hard for me to explain, but Shabazz Palaces is good for this. They want the people to make their own interpretation of the music and their art, which I have always loved and had respect for. But in retrospect, the videography is well done and it really leaves the viewer wondering, thinking and deciphering what they just saw. I love it. I also love that they played a mix of almost all of the songs from their album within this video, giving us a true taste of their musical talent.

This video is awesome, guys. Let me know what you all think of it.

P.S. It looks as if Palaceer Lazaro A.K.A. Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler (the main cat in the video) will be very busy in 2012. He will be reuniting with the Digable Planets for a new album and tour! All praises due to the Hip Hop heavens!

As the weekend has suddenly approached, I just want to send positivity and blessings to all of you. I just came across this photo, and I have been trying to remember the name of this movie for years! We watched The Red Balloon in grade school and there were no words, just a little boy chasing a balloon all around town. And it really inspired me then and still inspires me until this day to just chase after your dreams and stay afloat; meaning, maintain your happiness and keep doing what you love to do.

And neither can the legendary magazine, Dazed and Confused, who have chosen Kelis and 19 other artists to feature on their December issue covers. The 20 + 20 Covers Project By Rankin is D&C's latest project which celebrates their 20 year anniversary of being one of the UK and the world's best magazines that contain articles on different musicians, artists and much more.

Pharrell Williams, Kate Moss, Bjork and Alicia Keys are just a few of the many legendary pop culture figures that are featured on these 20 different covers, whom also will have exclusive interviews in this issue. And to know that Kelis has been recognized in this way is awesome. She is someone who definitely deserves this honor and I am very excited to read more about her musical and life journey in her own words.

And the sickest thing about this whole project is not only the legendary cover artists, but the 20 other artists that they consider to be the new leaders of world culture. It's going to be so dope to see who the artists have chosen and why.

Another Soldier Gone...

Yesterday, many music heads were sadly informed that Javon Coleman, better known as J-1, passed away. J-1 was a well known drummer and member of the band Master Blazter, which included Funk artist Dam-Funk.

What's so mind blogging about his passing is that recently I have been doing SO MUCH research on Dam-Funk, being that I am really feeling his music right now. And throughout this process, I began to learn about his performance band which included J-1. It's like I've seen J-1 in many different performances and videos that I have come across, but I never knew who he was as an individual artist. He was very talented to say the least, and seemed to have a very humble soul.

My condolences and love are with his family, friends and loved ones.

Life is too short family, cherish the day.

My favorite online magazine, Ghubar Magazine, has finally released their November issue. And what's so fabulous about this particular issue is that it is all about Green!

I honestly used to despise the color green as a child, but it was not until a couple years ago in college that I grew to love the color. A color of so many meanings and full of expression; I love how Ghubar Mag chose to focus on this color and how it has become a new favorite in the fashion world and everyday style.

I also like the fact that Ghubar not only talked about Green fashion, but how "going green" is an initiative that can be very beneficial for our environment and personal health.

As you all should know by now and if not, let me refresh your memory; I have a LOVE for accessories. Ever since I was younger, I have always felt that a fresh outfit was nice, but the accessories that you wear really make you stand out. So when I came across the amazing creations of Charisma Eclectic, I was undeniably in awe.

I discovered these beautiful accessories by chance, a couple months ago through a Vegan website that had an article about an African American woman and her experiences being a Vegetarian. One link led to another and I discovered the beautiful creations of Ms. Clara Star. This 31 year old mother, vegetarian, and jewelry and accessory designer decided to create her own business last year based around what she loves; creative accessories! And I must say, for her to only have been in business for a year, she has definitely made a name for herself amongst many style and fashion bloggers, websites and jewelry collectors.

I decided a couple weeks ago that I wanted to do an interview with Clara, because her creations really inspire. I purchased a pair of her "Wish You Would" earrings, which are of the 70's blaxploitation character Foxy Brown which is SO my style. What I like about Charisma Eclectic is that it is a collection that really represents unique and individual style. It reflects culture, merges styles from every decade and has a piece that anyone could be attracted to.

My interview with Clara Star of Charisma Eclectic.com:

What city were you born in and what city do you currently reside in?

[Born in] Louisville, KY [I currently live in] New Albany, IN

How old were you when you realized that you had a love for accessories and making things?

5 years old

Do you have a love or obsession for jewelry and accessories?

As a plus sized teen, cute and trendy clothing were hard to come by. I relied on accessories to define my style. I always loved colorful sneakers and handbags.

Were you always into making jewelry?

Being a hobbyist, I've toyed around with making jewelry in the past, but crocheting and graphics took up most of my time.

What inspires you?

Foremost originality inspires me. Original forms of music, visual art, spirituality, anything that is fresh and exciting keeps me motivated to create.

I can tell that you have a love for shapes, the boldness of colors and patterns etc... Where does that stem from?

I adore bold colors and shapes because they usually speak for themselves. A circle is just a round object alone, but pair it with a triangle and it becomes a design. I used to spend countless hours in the library skimming fashion, photography and music books. Throughout all of these I found inspiration for color, patterns and more.

Do you try to send out a message/feeling with your art?

My objective for every piece that comes from Charisma is individuality. I want the piece to speak to the owner and the viewer. Like art, I see my works as conversation pieces. If I have on a pair of Nina Simone earrings, I want someone to say, "Hey, that's Nina. I love her music!". We may then talk of poetry or black feminism. However, another may ask me who she is or why I'm wearing her on my ear. This is then a chance to introduce her and her works. I want my designs to be a statement for fashion. A lot of people need to know [that] the definition of style has changed. We are in the age of individuality.

Many of your pieces are pictures of musicians, artists and activists; why?

I think my whole life has been made up of music, art, and community activism. Since Charisma is a product of me, my pieces definitely reflect such. Growing up, I hung around my Uncle Roey a lot who was a local singer. He introduced me to Al Green, Parliament, and Cameo. I kept the love for these musicians in my adult years. Music is a melodic art form that fuels my creativity. I was so inspired by Al Green's charismatic personality, that I named my business Charisma Eclectic. Art has always been conducive to fueling movements. Many items in my collections are inspired by community activists, groups, or spirituality. Both are near and dear to me for they have the power to change lives.

Are all of your pieces handmade by you?

Yes, I am a one woman show and every piece is handmade by me.

I can tell by many of your pieces, you have a nostalgic love for the 70's (like myself), is this true?

I love the 60's and 70's. Often times, I wonder if I had a past life that took place in the 70's! I feel like we're reaching an era like the 70's now. Everyone is into rocking vintage pieces, clothing and jewelry. I love the 60's and 70's for its fashions, slang language, bold interiors, huge cars; all of that funk!

How important is it for African Americans to have jewelry that reflects who we are and our culture?

I think African Americans can wear jewelry and anything for that matter and make it ours. We can throw on a sweatsuit and a Chinese jade necklace and be fresh! I'm glad to see the resurgence of African prints, Navajo patterns and more. When I was a teen these items were mocked because they were so opposite of the European styles the mall sold. I think its important for us to wear what reflects us, be it metaphysical crystals or antiqued brass.

What is your favorite item to make and what is your favorite piece that you have made thus far and why?

I love creating earrings with faces. As a graphic designer there's nothing like having a vision, rendering it, then seeing it manifest.

As a Black woman and business owner, how has your experience been owning and operating your own business?

I've had a wonderful time running my business. I think its because I'm the sole owner and only employee (smile). This means I have full creative reign, marketing, and financial power of my business.

What kind of advice would you give to people out there that may be interested in owing their own business based around their own personal creations?

This is a good time in the world for Black women to start their own businesses and utilize their creative skills. Find your niche and research it. Analyze what makes your business different from someone else's. Perfect your product, master it.

Do you have any new items that you are currently making?

I've been working on a new collection for Winter. I'll also relaunch the home decor section of my site soon. Sometimes I shell out pieces one after another. Other times I wait for the inspiration and vision to move me. I guess you could say I'm trying to be like Maxwell and D'Angelo, hahaha.

What are your futures plans and dreams for Charisma Eclectic?

I love seeing my goods in boutiques so I'm working toward landing more wholesale accounts especially overseas. And of course I dream of my fave female celebs in my pieces!

I didn't even know what I would title this post honestly, just felt the need to share this with you all. I mean, words can't describe how breathtaking this photo is for me. Beautiful Black man, strong Black wombman, whom you cannot see, but her presence is definitely felt through the expression of her soul mate and through the being that is growing within her womb. I mean, the man's expression is what really sets this photo off. The pure bliss and feeling of elation that he gives off is enough to make anyone smile. There is nothing like the union and bond between the Black man, woman and child. Puts me in the mind of Ausar, Auset & Heru and their holy trinity pertaining to Egyptian spirituality and the story of the beginning of mankind.

Hearts around the world ache as the news of Heavy D passing has struck us. I still can't believe it. All that I keep seeing people say on twitter and other sites is "what a good guy he was" and how "he always wore that smile". And this does not surprise me, because you could tell that he had a sincere heart and beautiful spirit.

What I love the most about him is that he added his own unique flavor to Hip-Hop. From his stage presence, to the way he rapped to his impeccable dance moves... No one could touch my man! He made music that the youngins could listen to all the way up to the adults. Dwight Arrington Myers will be missed. May you rest in peace, my brotha!

I happened to come across this video via Facebook off of my friend's wall, shout out to Savage Ballet. Being that he is a Hip-Hop artist, many of his posts are videos or links of up and coming or already established artists that are really dope. A couple days ago, he posted this video and I was amazed.

Fable is a Hip Hop artist from Chi-Town and this is the debut video for his song entitled, "I Beg To Differ", and it's HOT! This song screams Hip-Hop; the lyrics, the laid-back beat. And what I like about the video is that there is no special effects (rumpshaking, Benzs & flashing lights); real scenery that matches the content of a real song.

This video is just so refreshing to see because, it let's me know that people out there are still pumping out that real Hip-Hop. Big ups to this brotha, this is for the real Hip-Hop Headz out there!

I am a strong 22 years old today and I am so happy to see what this new year has in store for me. I feel very blessed to be here today and to have experienced all that I have experienced thus far in life. This past week and weekend has been truly magical for me, guys. I have received so much love from so many people and it has shown me what is really important in life and how much I mean to people.

During this show I interviewed the lecturer, organist and my former music professor, Dr. Anthony Williams, about this topic. We discussed the history of Jazz, whether African Americans have deserted this genre for others and what we can do to keep this genre alive and relevant. Needless to say, it was an EXCELLENT show.

Tribute to Soul Train Edition 2: Ashford & Simpson

Ok guys, my second and final tribute to Soul Train for the month of October is to an amazing duo that is ever so deserving of one, Ashford & Simpson.

When I tell you that I watch this video almost everyday, I am NOT exaggerating. The lyrics of this song are phenomenal.

"...If happiness is what you seek, first you better realize you're walking down the wrong street. 'Cause I found it, yeaaah.. And it's DEEP INSIDE and I want to take you there."

And not only are the lyrics moving, so is watching these two lovers perform this song. You can really see and feel the passion between these two. You can tell that they mean EVERY word that they are saying to each other and it is just a testament of the true love that was shared between the two of them.

Music like this is in dire need right now, especially in these times. Love songs will always stand the test of time and they live on forever due to their message, and this is definitely one of those kind of songs. A song that will be listened to for years to come.

And as I close out this post, I would like to reiterate my appreciation for the show Soul Train and what it did for African American artists, American history, and most importantly, its viewers. I am sure many people can agree with me when I say that this show really SHOWED the world what talent looks like and documented the African American musical experience for many years.

I would love to look like this. The Queen of Blending (Lauren), a creative and very imaginative makeup artist, created this amazing look based off of inspiration from the cartoon character, Rainbow Brite.

Adorable, right? I totally forgot about Rainbow Brite, to be honest with you... So I could not re-call who she was trying to portray through her makeup. And after doing her makeup, she even said that she realized that it came out a little different than the way she expected it to...But loves it the same way, and so do I.

She calls is "Gangster Rainbow Brite", but I call it dope ass techniques. Guys, if I post pictures of myself November 1st and I have random blotches of makeup all over my face because I attempted to be Rainbow Brite... DON'T JUDGE ME! lol

I know that you guys knew I could not let this month go by and NOT do a video or post about the greatest month of the year. The Fall is officially in full force, my birthday is in 21 days and that means that HALLOWEEN is right around the corner. I have considered going trick-or-treating, my friends... PLEASE don't judge me! LOL

I just thought I would stop by with a video to update you on how I've been and to see how you all have been doing. I can say that this video shows more of my personality than all of them, I really had a blast making this one. Enjoy, guys!

Can Two Win or One?

Ok, guys. This post was a MUST-DO. Recently, I have been really DIGGING into the music of The Sylvers. This family-group were and still are talented beyond comparison and have one of the most unique sounds of any musical group that I have come across.

And as my digging has obviously led me to great music, something random happened. I learned that one of the songs that I came across entitled, "Only One Can Win" by The Sylvers was sampled by one of my favorite producers, J-Dilla. When it comes to songs being sampled, it usually happens the other way around... I will hear the cover and/or sample song first, then have to back track to the original, but this time it happened the other way around...But I complaining!

So as I am listening to the original version, I am mind-blown by the production of the song and how The Sylvers manage to make their voices blend so well. I am also amazed by the maturity of Edmund Sylvers voice, who sung lead on this song as he was only a teenager. Then, I marvel at the way Jay Dee was able to mix this record and make a 70s R&B joint sound so fresh, with a Hip-Hop type of twist to it.

And this leads me to the question of whether only one can really win? Because in this case and musically speaking, I am totally in love with both of these songs. Although, it is only one song that has been re-mixed, there is a true dynamic between the both of these songs. A dynamic that makes them both unique in their own right....And this is why I LOVE music.

Take a listen guys and tell me what you think? And PLEASE listen to the high note that Edmund hits; as well as, how The Sylvers make their voice echo/vibrate in unison... CRAZY!

Tribute to Soul Train #1: Deniece Williams

The month of October, every week, I will be doing a post dedicated to the show Soul Train. For all of those who are not aware, Soul Train celebrated its 40 year anniversary since the airing of their first episode on October 2nd, 1971. And here at Purpleskyyys, it is a must that I celebrate this.

Not only am I a fan of the show, but I too remember getting up on Saturday's at 12 (this was in the 90s) to watch Soul Train. This was after Don Cornelius, the founder and host of the show, had Shemar Moore hosting the show. Even after Soul Train's classic and most legendary years throughout the 70s into the early 80s, you could still count on watching this show to see what new dances were hot, what the style was and what new music was popping.

And with that being said, this week I am paying tribute to Deniece Williams's 1976 performance to her song, Free. This song is probably one of my favorite songs and really exemplifies the kind of range I would love to have as a singer. So I automatically fell in love with this performance. I love the color tones on the set, the random yells from the dancers in the crowd and just how beautiful and elegant Deniece looks. (P.S. I love her nails)

Hello, everyone!

I hope you all are enjoying your week. I personally took a lil' break from the internet and had a technology purge for about two days just to clear my mind as the new season has arrived and as I am beginning to start new business and life projects within the next couple months (there is never a dull moment in this girl's life).

As I returned back to Youtube, to my surprise, Ms. Alexyss K. Tylor, life and spiritual coach and motivational speaker, uploaded a new video. She has not been uploading videos recently and her viewers have been quite thirsty for her presence on the internet.

This new video that she has uploaded is actually a excerpt from a documentary that is in the works that is about her life. Alexyys has been through the fire and back as far as things that she has had to dealt with in life. From living in a broken home, to witnessing the death of a sibling at such a young age and more; she has been through it all. But Alexyss has not let this keep her down. She has managed to overcome all of these obstacles and be who she is today, a beautiful Black woman that aims to continually inspire and help people all over the world with her story and spirit.

I wanted to share this with you all because I quite frankly felt that I needed to. And I will warn you, she gets quite ill when it comes to her language at times but, she is who she is. Watch the video, be inspired, and let me know what you think.

Magical Tuesdays @ Toko Baru

Today I went to Ludlow Ave. here in Cincinnati, which is a legendary street for its many one-of-a-kind jewelry stores, clothing stores and restaurants. Toko Baru happens to be one of the many unique shops on this strip, and it is one that I absolutely adore.

My sister needed to go to Toko to get a decorative notebook for writing, and I went with her not really expecting to buy anything. Needless to say, I haven't been there in a while and my little feet would not stop running from this and that thing that I liked and wanted to buy.

I initially ran across this mood ring that was obviously a must buy for me. Say what you want, but I love them and they are a childhood favorite of mine. As soon as I put it on it turned Blue then to Violet, two of my favorite colors... I WAS SOLD, or should I say it was sold. Then my eyes feasted onto a basket of what I like to call "magic wands"; these pens were gorgeous. They had Black ones, hot pink ones...I was sold again. This pen makes me want to write and really inspires me to get back into my notebook and I definitely will.

When I tell you guys I felt like a kid in a candy store; I could not stop touching all of the things that I liked. I really should've taken pictures of the store to show you everything that they had. From their jewelry, to home decorations to natural body products...It is a beautiful store. I will definitely be going back VERY SOON to buy some of the things that I wanted, I may even see if I can do a little video on them.

Today really proved to me why I love Tuesdays so much; they are truly magical.

New York Fashion Week: Raye 6

As one of the most exciting weeks in NYC is coming to an end, it is only right that I post about it. I have seen so many photos of the many fashion designers, models, celebrities and other people that have been strutting their stuff throughout New York City this week on the internet. And when I came across Ms. 6's photos on her facebook page, I fell in love with her whole look.

First and foremost, her dress designed by Farai Simoyi is to die for. I love how it starts off as a pinkish-nude, modest dress and turns into a tropical array of colors. And her accessories, made by Devora of Dig Deep Inc. (y'all know I love accessories), are what I love the most. The beautiful crystal-stone necklace is so beautiful and her bracelets add a tangy twist to the whole outfit.

And last, but not least. Her hair gives complete LIFE to everything. This has been her signature hairstyle ever since I have come across her and I dare anyone to say that they have ever seen anyone with this exact hairstyle, that could even attempt to rock it the way she does. And believe it or not, but I think that her bun is naturally all of her hair. STYLE.

Raye 6, as a musical artist and performer, definitely knows the art of showstopping and she manages to do it with her sense of style and fashion, as well. Much love to you sista, keep doing ya thing!

Lorna Simpson: Momentum

I came across this incredibly intriguing photo by the way of twitter some weeks back, and it really grabbed my attention. I immediately tried to understand what was exactly going on in this photo; why are these people all gold? It seems as if they are in motion, why the ballet shoes?

After further research, I learned that the figures in this photo are indeed suppose to be in motion and that this is a photo from an exhibit entitled, Momentum. Momentum is a collection of artwork by the New York based artist, Lorna Simpson, and this exhibit is centered around a particular occurrence in her life that has stayed in her mind and conscious into her adulthood. At the age of eleven, Lorna performed a ballet routine at New York's Lincoln Center.

"I was very surprised by a powerful sense of reversal while performing," she recalls. "I had this intense urge to occupy the role of observer, as opposed to being immersed in my well-rehearsed effort. I [wanted] to satisfy my need to be the spectator of this performance." -quote from nowness.com

And this explains the continuous spins performed by the dancers and silent pauses that are shown within the video that is also a part of this exhibit. It shows that as she performed, there were moments of her putting herself into the audience, mentally, to see herself performing as she is indeed performing the actual act. Truly mind-blowing and very interesting to say the least. Within this exhibit there are also photos of Avery Fisher Hall and the Metropolitan Opera House printed in gold ink, as they compliment her memory of a performance that initially lasted for only a couple minutes that have left an impression on her memory for a lifetime. I truly enjoy this exhibit and its abstractness, yet relatively to the human memory and intellect... LOVELY!

Afro Sheen: What happened to this?

Aren't these ads just beautiful? I look at these pictures and really become very confused on how we have changed from this. Now don't get me wrong, I completely understand that things change with time; beliefs, styles, trends etc... But when did it ever go out of style to be your natural self in all aspects?

To me, this goes deeper than wearing natural hair or even the ads. What happened to Black owned hair stores, what happened to commercials with Black people in them that actually put us in a positive light...What about self-acceptance? It would make a hell of a difference if we saw ads like these in our neighborhoods and duct-taped on modern day hair stores. Think of how children of today would respond to this compared to seeing people of other ethnic groups always representing a product that a business wants us to buy. What happened to our OWN?

I could go on and on, but I'd just like to post those questions and concerns to say that this was a truly beautiful time for our people. I wasn't even born during the 70s, but from a cultural standpoint, it ain't hard to tell that there was much more love and respect for thyself and the community during this decade and it showed in everything we did. The way we wore our hair, the kind of music we listened to and the major moves that we were making as a people when it came to education and business. A true sign of heightening the intellect and pushing forward through turbulent times.

And I highly suggest that you all watch the commercials posted below, which is what I came across initially. They are entertaining, message-driven and even funny at times to say the least. This is deeper than the shine of the sheen yall, this is about our community...What happened?

As the Summer has basically been swept away by the cold front and the intense winds of Autumn, I am recounting and reminiscing over all of the "summer jams" that got me through this amazing summer. From graduating from college, to living in Costa Rica for a month to traveling within the U.S., I would NOT have been able to do it without music. As a lover of music, I really must have it around me almost at all times. And many songs remind me of certain places, things or particular moments of the past and that's what my Summer playlist means to me. From always starting off my day in Costa Rica by playing Foxy's "I Can't" and walking to the bus stop to hearing the song "Loca" by Shakira and being immediately reminded of my Spanish teacher playing the video for us in class...Music tells stories, gets you through the day and just makes you happy and that's what Summer playlists are to me; storytellers.

Happy Birthday, Foxy Brown!

Happy Birthday to one of the illest rappers to ever do it, Inga Marchand, better known as, Foxy Brown. I have always been a fan of Foxy, but it was not until last year that I really started to dig into her music and realize how amazing of a rapper she is. And it is not only Foxy's music that attracts me to her, but it is also her personality. She has been often seen as one of the most controversial rappers, but I find her to be a very interesting and strong woman. From her outspoken and sassy ways, to her Trinidadian roots, to her one of a kind style; so mysterious and different, yet her own...And that is what I love about her. She has always been in a league of her own, never apologizing for who she is. Something that is also interesting about Foxy is that although she may rap about having diamonds, to rolling in Benzes and totting guns, she always has songs on her albums that are true to the soul. Songs where she talks about her insecurities, how stardom has been a blessing and a curse, how she has dealt with being a dark-skinned Black woman to the troubles that young woman in our society have to face. Foxy has a very hardcore persona, but maintains her femininity with the honesty that she portrays in her music and who she is a woman. And although she is over-looked and very underrated as a rapper, once you really get to know Foxy through her music, you learn to love Inga.

And with that being said, I am going to post some of Foxy's more deeper and meaningful songs that I KNOW the masses have not heard just so you can get a feel for this girl...Because she goes IN in so many ways. Enjoy the music guys! Peace ♥

Welcome to a new week, guys! I hope you all are enjoying your Labor Day and taking time off to just chill and relax. I just wanted to take the time out to post a poem that I just wrote entitled, Wind. As I woke up today, no less than 30 minutes ago...The wind was running rampant outside of the window. And I just felt inspired to write this piece.

As you blow, you tell so many stories
You catch our attention
As you move so rapidly, you cause us to slow down
You make us think
You make us take in the all of the breeze that you are exhaling
As we inhale the after effects in all of its motion
For a change is on the rise

Although Fall will not officially commence until September 23, 2011.....I am celebrating in advance.

Being a Fall baby, I naturally have a love for this season. Witnessing the change in the weather, seeing the leaves drop sporadically from the trees, and just a sense of newness and true change coming...There is nothing like it.

And with the season changing comes the end and the beginning of certain things. It also means that we are closer to closing out another year, and my, did 2011 go by fast? I'm just ready for all of the new and great experiences that are coming my way in September and all throughout Fall. And with this new season starting I plan or should I say, pledged, to do somethings:

Blog more
Create my BlogTalkRadio show
Meditate more
And focus on ME

Now these things may alter a little bit more as time goes on, but this is what my current focus is on in the short run for right now. And hopefully, with dedication and faith in myself I can do all of this. Sometimes, I really feel like I'm doing the most LOL

So what are some of the things that you guys are trying to focus on more as we are entering a new season? Work less, have more fun? Take a class or start up a new hobby? Holla back at cha girl!

Would you KICK IT in these?

This past weekend I went to the mall with my Mom, so she could pick up what I thought was one item, which turned into about 4....I digress. And as we hit the shoe section in Dillard's, I happened to feast my eyes on these UGG boots.

Now, I must say that I have not worn this style of boot since my Junior year in high school. This was around the time that I dressed more preppy and Ugg type boots had just hit the scene and fit my style. But for some reason, I was automatically drawn to these sparkly shoes. I think that they are really cute, very flashy, but cute. They obviously could not be worn with any other item of clothing that would literally "outshine" them, but if dressed up with some solid color, modest clothing they would look great.

Maybe its the little girl in me that has always liked sparkly shiny things, I mean what little girl doesn't? I must say that these shoes really add a new and different style to what is considered Fall and Winter shoewear.

So what's the call; would you kick it in these? I honestly think that I might have to get a pair of purple or black ones for Christmas. Santa, do you hear me?

We celebrate you, Michael!

Today would've been Michael Joseph Jackson's 53rd birthday and I must honor his life this year, as I do EVERY YEAR.

I mean, I could go into detail about all of his accolades and what he has accomplished musically, what records he broke as far as sales go etc etc... But I just want to touch on what his music and life meant to me.

I fell in love with Michael Jackson and his music when I first saw the Motown 25 tape that my parents recorded back in the 80s when the show originally aired. This is the show that he premiered the Moonwalk on and performed Billie Jean for the first time. And not to mention, riding in my Dad's car and him always having a Jackson 5 cassette (yes, cassette) on heavy rotation.

But I must say I became a true fan after I got addicted to the movie The Wiz in 7th grade and watched it everyday after school. There were so many instances that I can say I fell in love with Michael. But what honestly made me love Michael so much was not his music, it was the human being that he was. It seemed as if everything that he did, he did it for the people. He was a very self-less person and created his music to help others. Yall, when I ran across this video last night... My heart jumped with joy. I was SO young when this came out, but I do remember hearing it on the radio. All of the girls at school and on the school bus would sing this song, in UNISON...Back in the day, when songs would made you feel like you were actually one of the singers. Pardon me: *Having Flashbacks*

"This Lil' Game We Play" was sung by the Chicago bred group, Subway, featuring the ever so soulful R&B group, 702. I didn't even know 702 was singing on this song until now, and this was also before Kameelah Williams joined the group. And to know that Gerald Levert co-wrote and produced this song is amazing. So if anybody ever asks me what the 90s sounded like to me, I will automatically direct them to this song. That R&B flavor with a little bit of Hip Hop flair is what I love about this, and let's not even get on the 90s apparel. We could go on for days. LOL

I know my people who grew up in the 90s will appreciate this one. Do you guys remember this?

RIP Nick Ashford

I just found out that Nick Ashford of the incomparable songwriting/production duo, Ashford & Simpson, has passed away of throat cancer at the age of 70. This is sad news for fans and those who have literally grown up to their music. For years, Ashford and his wife, Valerie Simpson, have written and produced some of the greatest songs of all time. Songs that have become anthems within the soundtracks of our lives.

Nickolas Ashford, born in Fairfield, South Carolina on May 4, 1942, moved to Michigan with his family where he was raised. He got his musical start by singing and writing gospel songs for his choir. But it was not until he moved to New York and met Valerie in 1964 at White Rock Baptist Church that it became official that creating music was going to be his lifetime career. And little did he know, this union lasting more than 45 years would lead to them writing hits for some of the world's greatest artists; such as, Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross and Ray Charles.

Throughout the beginning of their union in the early 60s, Ashford & Simpson recorded various songs together for Glover imprint. Many of these tunes went unheard, but it wasn't until the mid 60s that they began to receive the attention that they deserved. They wrote Ray Charles's hit "Let's Go Get Stoned" and eventually joined the Motown machine and it is their where they created magic.

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell had began recording as a duo around this time and when Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" for them, the rest was truly history. "Your Precious Love" and "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" were just a few of the hits that Ashford & Simpson created for Motown. As time went on, they struck gold with Diana Ross with "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)" and "Remember Me". And it just came to my attention that this duo also wrote and produced the woman's anthem, "I'm Every Woman" for Chaka Khan. If it is not already obvious, Ashford and Simpson were literally a match made in heaven.... a musical heaven, that is.

In 1984, Ashford and Simpson finally gained duo success with their international hit, "Solid". This song has went on to be used in multiple movies and commercials and is deemed as one of the greatest love songs of the 80s. Just thinking about their contribution to music makes me so happy. But to know that Ashford is no longer here with us is truly saddening. We thank you so much for all that you have done for music; your legacy will continue to live on forever.

Like Mary J. Blige said in one of her greatest and most profound songs, "Say what's on your mind and you'll find in time that all the negative energy, it wall all cease." And I could go on and on with the rest of the lyrics, but I am going to focus on this one, specifically.

Today, I want to do a really quick post just to send some inspiration and information to you all out there. And it all has to do with EXPRESSION. Too many times in life, we feel obligated to suppress our feelings and what we believe in. I might want to do one thing, but Timmy and Jenny may not want to....So I guess, I won't do it either because I don't want to be the odd ball out. This mentality of conformity and self-degradation has to stop.

Now is the time, being that the season is slowly changing and we are transitioning from Summer into Fall where true atmospheric change is occurring. Thus, we have to go along with nature and begin to change and improve our own human nature. It is time to stop being afraid, it is time to open our mouths....And it is time to be who we want to be.

The reason why I am saying this is because, recently I have been confronted with a lot of things and/or people that have been trying to block or bring me down to a level of unconsciousness that no longer serves me. People and things like this must be shook off, word to Mariah.

Don't let change bring you down folks, don't let people keep you from opening up your heart and mind to new ideas and aspirations....It all starts with the mind, then you have to focus on the mouth...speak into the atmosphere what you want your present state to be and what you want your future to hold. It is all up to YOU.

27 Club: What about Jacob Miller?

After the devastating lost of Amy Winehouse (whom I will be doing a post and video on later), many people have been talking about the legend and mystery behind the 27 Club. This, being a group of entertainers that died at the age of 27, like Amy. Indeed this is a very eerie, yet common coincidence with artists. But it just recently came to my attention that another artist died at this age ,as well. The late, GREAT Jacob "Killer" Miller.

Jacob Miller was one of Reggae's rising stars throughout the 70s. Born in Mandeville, Jamaica in 1952, he soon moved to Kingston where he began to recognize his love for Reggae music. At the age of 16, he began to record at Studio One, a legendary record label and studio, and began to cut songs for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd and Augustus Pablo. There he recorded hits like, "Love Is A Message (Keep On Knocking)", "Who Say Jah No Dread" and "Each One Teach One". When 1974 rolled around, he then joined the well known Reggae group, Inner Circle, that were known throughout Jamaica for their covers of American Pop songs. After this union, things took off. With songs like, "Tired Fi Lick Weed Inna Bush", "We a Rockers" and "Tenement Yard" being birthed from this group, they knew they could make no wrong steps.

And although Jacob was notably recognized for his music, it was his faith in Rastafarianism and his love for his African roots and culture that drove him to be the person that he was. During this time, there were many artists that claimed to be Rastas and down for "Rasta livity", but many people felt that they were frauds. Jacob was all about reality and the de-commercialization of Jamaican culture and you would often hear him talk about it in his songs and during performances. He was a true activist in his own right and had a beautiful spirit that people loved and were attracted to.

As he continually made music, he was also featured in the 1978 film, Rockers. This film single handedly introduced the world to Reggae music at its height throughout the 70s. Jacob and many other Reggae artists and bands; such as, Gregory Issacs, Leroy Smart, Kiddus I, Big Youth, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace and Inner Circle were featured in this film that has went down in history as one of the greatest documentaries to display Jamaican culture and the true roots of Reggae music.

Things could go nowhere but up for Jacob Miller. But in 1980, after Jacob was involved in a terrible car accident, he died at the age of 27. Until this day, people still talk about how devastating his death was and how his future was so promising. There was no other artist like Jacob, his music, his spirit and his voice are incomparable to any other artist that were out then and even now. I highly recommend that you all view the videos that I have posted of Jacob, he was truly one of a kind. We will continually life his spirit up as one of the greatest Reggae artists to ever do it!

Who is Roy Ayers???

So I'm sure you all have heard of Mary J. Blige, Notorious BIG, Mos Def and Erykah Badu, right? And you probably dig their music, right? Well if it was not for one man and his tremendous influence on music throughout the 70s, then its pretty safe to say that their music and sound would not be what it is today.

Roy Ayers, musical genius, intellectual and downright cold brother has been making music for over 50 years. His music has spread around the world and has been recognized as a sound that no one has even been able to replicate since its creation. The lyrics, the instrumentation and that infamous vibraphone has blessed millions of our ears either through his own work or through sampling of his music by countless artists and bands.

With that being said, Roy Ayers in a sense is an unsung contributor to the creation and evolution of music. Whether it be Hip Hop, R&B, and even Dance, his music has been intertwined into these genres and many people do not even know it. It has been time for Mr. Ayers to receive his just due for what he gave to us through music, and I am so happy to present this to you...

Behold, The Roy Ayers Project! This project is a documentary that is simply focusing on exposing the life, musical journey and mind of Roy Ayers. It is also a movement that allows artists of any kind to pay homage to Mr. Ayers through art, music or even dance. Just seeing how this whole project is unfolding is amazing, and how many people he has truly blessed with his music is even more moving.

A trailer for the documentary was released a couple days ago, and it is a true tease to what is in store for viewers. I cannot express how happy I am to see so many people showing love to Roy Ayers, it is long over due and it is only the beginning.

Shabazz Palaces: "Black Up" Album Review

Shabazz Palaces is a group that is very hard to explain. With few interviews available throughout the internet, it is hard to really put a face/personality with this group. But the music really does it for you.

This incredibly interesting group consists of two members, Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler of the legendary Hip Hop group Digable Planets and Tendai Maraire; both hailing from Seattle, Washington. And ever since their beginning stages as a duo back in 2009/2010, this group has kept a low profile and has received buzz through dedicated fans, music blogs and Youtube videos.

Many may ask what is so extraordinary about this group; why so much hype?... And the reason is because of their sound. It is significantly different than any other music that is out there right now. At first listen, it is hard to put a "label" or to assign this group to any genre because the way the music meshes together amongst all of the instruments and beats is incredible.

After the release of two EPs, this group has signed with SubPop Records and has released their first full length album entitled, Black Up, which has received rave reviews amongst many media sites and blogs. And there is no need to doubt that the unique sound that exudes from this album is the cause of this.

From beginning to end, this album is a classic. From songs like Are you... Can You...Were You? (Felt) which explains the feelings of everyday life to the haunting, yet addictive beat of An Echo From The Hosts That Profess Infinitum and the smooth and bass-filled song, Recollection of The Wraith where Palaceer Lazaro (Butler) speaks about "clearing space out so we can space out" ...This album is truly one of a kind and will definitely have you spaced out.

What I, and I am sure many SP listeners appreciate the most about this group is that they are really refreshing our ears to a wave of new music that has never truly been heard before...And if it has, it has not been tapped into the way Shabazz Palaces has. The fusion of Hip Hop, Dance and Afro-beat that I hear from this album really takes me outside of the normal music that I hear on the radio or that is pushed by mainstream media.

The time has already come for this wave to come in and people are truly receiving it. Shabazz Palaces has a very bright future as far as music goes and their choice to step outside of the box with their whole persona as a group, including their music is commendable. I suggest EVERYONE go cop this album or at least listen to some of their songs and just be inspired by their individuality.

But Tuesdays have always been weird days to me. And when I say weird I don't mean scary or anything.....It is such a layback, relax, meditate and think life over type of days....Eerie things happen on Tuesdays, in my opinion. I must do more research on this day.

With that being said, this song really describes today's mood for me. It is very hot in Cincinnati today (92F) which would make most people irritated, but it actually makes me more still and observant....Like an owl......And the mood of this song captures just that.

Jasmin Rodriguez, also known as, Vintage Vandalizm is a model and fashion blogger. She just recently posted pictures on her blog of her outing at the Jazz Age Festival on Governors Island and she looked stunning.

From her long sleeved mid-drift top and skirt to what I like to call her "Punjab" Arabian turban, she really stepped out. What I like is that if you were to look at her items of clothing, separately, you would think that this outfit would be more of a misfit, but she pulls it off tremendously. That is the beauty of fashion, or should I say, style.

He was actually thinking about not releasing it until later on in the year, but thank God he didn't.

The Power of Purple

Beauty and lifestyle blogger, Patrice Elizabeth Grell Yursik, of Afrobella.com had the opportunity of a lifetime a couple months ago. Her and several other beauty bloggers were given the opportunity to come up with their own idea for a new product for MAC cosmetics. They had the option of creating a lipglass or eyeshadow product for a new and limited line of products entitled "Bloggers' Obsessions", wicked idea, right???

Well, Patrice knew immediately that she wanted to create some kind of lipglass that women of all colors could wear and look fabulous in, and she did just that. She came up with a very deep, yet fruity color purple that I think is so sexy yet elegant. She decided to call it, "All of My Purple Life", as a tribute to one of her favorite movies, Purple Rain, and to Purple being her favorite color.

Patrice stated in her post at Afrobella about her experience that not only is Purple her favorite color, but it is her power color. And it is so funny that she said that, because I feel the same way. Although it is not my personal favorite color, it is color that gives off a true vibe. A vibe that people are automatically attracted to. And that is exactly what this new lipglass has to offer, sassiness, power and fun.

I know that all makeup lovers are going to go crazy over this; it such a beautiful product. And congratulations to Patrice for such a major accomplishment and for showing us that dreams do come true.

Hey, guys!

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful week and is preparing to have an even better weekend. I just wanted to post a video about an interesting topic that has crossed everyone's mind once or twice throughout life, which is marriage.

In today's society, the divorce rate is at an all time high and people are beginning to view relationships in very different ways. A lot of people are beginning to wonder if "marriage" is now a cliche or even a thing of the past as many people are beginning to divorce, stay in a relationship with their counterpart and refuse to tie the knot, or even believe in what is called having an "open relationship".

Brother Echo, a conscious lifestyle specialist, who's videos I have been watching for a while now created a video talking about this very topic and brought forth some interesting points.

What is your take on marriage....Is it here to stay, are people not taking relationships seriously anymore, has the sacred and spiritual bond between two beings diminished over time or is it just an old-fashioned dream? Can its original meaning and intent be restored within our society?

"Sing a song..."

So, last night I was surfing the web. Just looking up random stuff; listening to music, facebookin' etc... And I happened to stumble across some Nelly Furtado videos on youtube. And I just love Nelly Furtado, especially post Timbaland Nelly.

Her song, "Turn Off The Lights", which is 11 years old...(makes me feel really old)...is my favorite song of hers. And I remember seeing the video when I was younger and just being so attracted to the colors and how different the video was; as well as, her style.

Well it wasn't until last night that I really realized what the song was really about. Being that she always said, "Turn of the lights", constantly, I thought the song was about getting it on. But I looked up the lyrics and discovered that it is really about finding the strength within yourself to learn how to love YOU and to not always feel the need to have someone around....It was about self love and acceptance. Interesting huh???

Well, it really through me for a loop and just had me thinking. It also makes me think of what other songs I used to sing all of the time when I was younger that I really didn't know the true meaning of....I'm sure there are thousands! lol

Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner

Although the name Thundercat may not ring your musical bell as a name that you recognize when it comes to artists…He is indeed no stranger to the game. For the past two decades, he and his bass guitar have created musical magic as he has played for Erykah Badu, Shafiq Hussain, Sa-Ra, Bilal, Flying Lotus and the Punk Rock band, Suicidal Tendencies.

It is Thundercat's enchanting, yet mystical voice and bass that you can hear on Flying Lotus's track, "Mmmhmm", which in a way was an introduction for us listeners to get a feel for his musical talents, individually. And with that being said, it is no surprise that Flying Lotus has been named the producer of Thundercat's highly anticipated solo album entitled, The Golden Age of Apocalypse.

This album that has actually unofficially been in the progress for years and is set to be released around August on brainfeeder.com. I suspect that the sound of this album will be like nothing else that we usually hear. And with Thundercat really being able to come out of his shell, musically, and really allowing us into his musical world...I feel like this album will be a classic (I'm just saying).

He has recently released one of the LP's tracks entitled, "For Love I Come", which is a remake of the great musician, George Duke's, 70's funk/soul hit, "For Love (I Come Your Friend)". And the way Thundercat added a psychedelic/electronic feel to it, really shows off his musical talents. For all of my remake lovers out there, believe me, this song will leave you oh, so very satisfied. And it will take you to another place.

I am so very excited about this album's release, primarily, because I have been a follower of Thundercat's musical work for a while now. But moreover, because I feel like it is time for a true change in music; for a new sound to be born. And I feel that Thundercat will be one of the leaders of this movement; just as E.Badu and Flying Lotus have paved the way.

Miss Van + Bailarinas + Twinkles = Greatness

For all of those contemporary art lovers living in the NYC area: This is for you.

Miss Van will be having a solo exhibition entitled "Bailarinas" at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery! Starting today, May 26-June 25th, 2011, she will have an amazing display of her latest work that centers around the essence of ballerinas with a "Miss Van" twist. And from some of the sample pieces that I have seen; the exhibit looks amazing (below).

And not only will she be featuring her work in this exhibition, but she will also have a book signing event at the Cotton Candy Machine in Brooklyn, NY. The two books that she will be releasing entitled "Twinkles" and "Atame" are compositions of old pieces that were exhibited in galleries from years past (Atame) and new pieces of art that she has subjectively changed through her own creativity (Twinkles). You know, news like this is just reconfirming why I need to relocate to an artsy/creative city where events like this occur, I mean these are one a kind events. The Nu Revolution is here

My girls are back; Les Nubians are officially back in full effect!!!

It has been over 5 years since these two Afropean sisters of Cameroonian and French decent have released an album. And I am so happy that their fans from all over the world will finally be able to hear some good music full of love, inspiration and positivity.

Today, I happened to run across their video for their latest single, Afrodance, off their new album entitled, Nu Revolution. I had previously heard the song a couple months ago and honestly forgot about it, but there is no way I can with this amazing video.

This song is simply about celebrating natural hair, in all forms. I also interpret it as a song that celebrates Black people and who we are, as well. I just love the positive message behind it, and the video is just amazing. I have always been in love with Les Nubians' style and beauty and this video really exemplifies that. The different hairstyles, the people of all different shades and tones, the videography and transitions...it is truly irresistible!

I hope you all sincerely enjoy this video and song as much as I do. Cop that album, and support good music by two beautiful sistas!

Fafi meets CHANEL...

And what a union it was... I just saw that one of my favorite artist's, Fafi, joined forces with CHANEL this past Monday at the Chanel-Colette ephemeral boutique in Paris to customize some of their bags. And I know personally, that the price of a Chanel bag is equivalent to the down payment on a car, so buying one would be out of my league. And Chanel bags really aren't my style, but a Fafi-Chanel bag is. And the idea of combining art with fashion is what I love about this whole union; it looked as if the process was very fun and interesting watch.

A new week has arrived...

I hope that everyone had an excellent weekend. Today has been very chill for me. Just sitting back, relaxing and meditating over my past week and preparing for Spring Break which I am very excited for. I cannot wait to go home and spend time with my family and friends, shop and just be in a familiar place.

Do you all have any special plans for the break? If not, live it up wherever you are and don't forget to always set aside some time each day for yourself; its a must!!!

Locs of LOVE...

To all of those inspired by natural hair, that have locs or don't have either...Get a load of this.

Franchesca is a graphic desginer, blogger and comedian that has been sharing her loc journey through her youtube channel and blog for about 4 years now. Two days ago, marked 7 years since she has been growing her locs and 3 years since she has been doing video timelines of her hair/loc journey.

To me, this video shows ultimate beauty in natural hair at all stages. From the first stage of transitioning from a perm to going natural and dealing with that awkward stage of having natural hair and not really knowing what to do with it...all the way up to being comfortable enough with your natural hair to where you start experimenting with different styles etc...

Franchesca does a full timeline in this video, including pictures from her childhood all the way up to now (she is 27) of how her hair has changed and grew tremendously since she has went natural and how her hair has changed since she started growing her locs. This video has really inspired me, and I am so happy that she has basically shared her life with us in this video to show the beauty of hair and all of its wonders. She is such a beautiful woman and I am sure that she will inspire many of you.

Well, today is that special day for those to buy gifts for their loved ones and express all of the love that they have for that certain someone in many ways. So to all my people who have a Valentine's to those who are riding this day out solo style, Happy Valentine's Day!

This is my special gift from me to you...This magazine cover will always resonate in my mind when I think about love and passion. I remember when I was a little girl and this magazine came out; I used to just stare at the cover not knowing what was going on exactly, but knowing that there was some kind of love between the two. So I guess you could say that this was one of my first interactions with understanding what love was; through an expression within a picture. And although Bobby and Whitney are not together anymore, these two used to ride for each other no matter what. And that's what love is all about.

And the song that I have posted is self-explanatory; it very fitting for the holiday!

When it comes to Ms. Erykah Badu, I think we all know that the word unpredictable comes to mind. When it comes to her music, style and fashion, videos etc...She always seems to do what people least expect or just totally blow our mind away. Well, I am here to say that she has done it again.

The video for her second single, "Gone Baby, Don't Be Long", was released yesterday and people are already in love with it. It was directed by the incredible artist within his own right, Flying Lotus. And let me tell you, Fly Lo. and Badu have really out done themselves with this video.

In my opinion, the video reminds me of someone traveling through a music world in outerspace. It's kind of hard to explain, because to me its one of those simply complex videos...but to me that is the beauty of Badu's work and mind.

New Amerykah Part Two (Return of The Ankh) was released last March and we have not received and new single or video from Badu since then, so it is good to see that she has not forgotten about her fans who have been wanting for a new single and video from her for a while now.

I am pretty sure that you all will enjoy this video, and the ending is my favorite part. Those familiar with her album will know why.

I TOTAL-ly miss the 90s!

Since this past summer, I have fallen in love with the 90s R&B group Total. When I was younger, I always loved their music. But now through research and just looking back on the past and really missing good and authentic R&B, I have found a whole new appreciation for these ladies.

Kima, Keisha & Pam were three of the most swagged out women of the 90s R&B era. I mean, even if they were not singing and were only acting as a cameo in a Biggie or Lil' Kim video, these girls stood out. And on top of that, they had three of the most eclectic voices of an R&B group during this time....But the way they managed to sync them together and sound so good is what I loved the most about them. So my appreciation for them and their talent has really grown as of recently. And I just thought that I would share this with you all, especially for my people who loved the 90s that can feel where I am coming from.

The video that I am posting is of them performing back in 1995 with Puff Daddy and an interview after the show from a Video Music Box special. I hope you all enjoy this rare, yet excellent footage of these, then young ladies. It's safe to say that I really miss Total and this culture of music.

The Three Wise Men of Hip Hop

I hope everyone had a great week. It was a lil' busy for me, but TGIS. Class was canceled yesterday due to snow, so you already know I was excited.

But back to the topic at hand...Today's video is of the legendary Black Eyed Peas. And I want people to know that there was a BEP way before Fergie came into the picture and they were just as great of a group without her as they are with her (I still prefer them before :-)).

This was their debut single from their first album, "Behind The Front". "Fallin' Up" is a perfect example of just raw, rhythmic Hip Hop. This video is so creative and soulful to me that it blows most Hip Hop videos of today out of the water. When I see this video is puts me in the mind state of three wise men of Hip Hop, wondering through the mountains of California in search for something great. Oh, how I love it!

So Miles Davis' song entitled, "Blue In Green" describes the photo of the day. Kelis is one of my favorite artists, style and fashion icons, period. And I just recently came across this picture of her that I have not seen in a while, which I love (as you all would expect lol).

Blue and Green are two of my favorite colors, and the way she has chosen to mix them into her hair color is far from amazing to me. And the leather jacket, accompanied by the blinged out necklace and the green fur and glasses say "funky-chic" in the best way. This photo was taken in 2000 at a Playboy Magazine party in New York. This photo makes me think, my how time flies and how Kelis' style and look has gotten even flier with time. That's why you gotta love Kelis. She is always staying funky and fresh no matter what.

TiffaniRhea is an inspirational poet, artist and speaker that has a youtube channel where she expresses a lot of her own ideas and views on life, love, relationships, religion, spirituality etc. I am a follower of her channel because she keeps it so real and aims to empower our community through her videos.

If you all haven't already heard about this wonderful story, I would like to enlighten you.

Ted Williams is a 53 year old homeless man from Brooklyn, NY who has been homeless throughout the streets of Columbus, Ohio for over 10 years. If you saw Ted on the streets, most people would think of him as your average homeless man begging for change. Well, he was that on the surface but had a very special gift that most people would look over....His voice.

Mr. Williams' voice is that of a superhero, radio announcer, or news anchor....Absolutely dynamic. And through the power of youtube, his voice was heard by thousands of people and now he is off the streets and being offered so many opportunities to do voiceovers for different companies, radio stations and tv stations. His story is just so inspiring to me and it really touched my heart. It really showed me that you don't know who people are in general, whether they are a homeless on the street or a random person walking by....You never know a person's story.

Ted Williams is such a warm spirited many too, just check out the video and peep how his life changed in the course of 48 hours.

This photo of Leontyne Price speaks a thousand words. It was taken by the amazing photographer, Carl Van Vechten, in 1953. This is one of the many photos that Vechten took of her as she was acting/posing as Bess from George Gershwin's award winning play, "Porgy and Bess".

I love this photo because Ms. Price is such a classy and regal woman. But these photos show a more sultry and sexy side of her. And most of all, I just love vintage photos.

Its been a VERY long time, but im back!

And I am wishing you all a happy, joyful and prosperous new year!

I have not been blogging because of the norm; school, business, learning more about life and myself etc.. and it has been a wonderful experience. But I am here to say that I will be back to blogging very soon. I have enjoyed my Xmas break and I am refreshed and ready to knock this last semester of undergrad out and then be on to my next phase in life.

In the heat of the night...

So I am playing around with the GarageBand application on my new Macbook and I happen to record myself singing the first verse to one of my favorite songs, "Seven Days", by Mary J. Blige. This is the first song that I learned all of the words to, purposely. This was because, not only did I love the song to death, but I actually understood what the lyrics meant at a young age (how proud I was lol).

So I just had to look up this video and share it with you all. In this video, Mary looks so beautiful, relaxed and calm. I can't help but to think of all of the things that she dealt with prior to her "Share My World" album when I look at this video, and I get so happy to think of how far Mary has come. She looks absolutely stunning in this video, a far way from the broken-hearted girl that she was in her "Real Love" and "My Life" days.

So this song is tributed to all of my smooth-groove lovers out there, and most importantly, my MJB fans out there! On the late night tip! Peace and love! ♥

I came across this photo via bglhonline.com and I was just in awe and amazed by these three young ladies.

The Caribana Festival popped off in Toronto, Canada a couple weekends ago, which is a festival that celebrates Caribbean culture in all forms. A young lady by the name of Eniola, who is a rising fashion designer and featurette of bglhonline.com, went to the event and took pictures of the many beautiful Black people of Toronto with natural hair. This happened to be one of the photos and the beauty of these three women is captivating to me. Their style, sassiness and all was just inspiring to me. I just love to see Black women doing their own thing, naturally. And to me, these are the beauties of the week. Staying strong...

I just feel the need to send some positive vibrations and major love to Fantasia Barrino. I don't think that I really need to explain why, because it is all over the news. I am just so tired of seeing this happening to Black women in the industry (Whitney Houston, Phyllis Hyman, Florence Ballard ). We gotta hold each other up, but it seems like just the opposite is happening. I pray that this woman gets her strength back and puts the right people in her circle and not just those who want to leech off of her. Learn to do for yourselves people, no one can help you but you. I hope that you all are having a great week, many blessings and love to you all! ♥

RIP Baatin

If you don't know who Baatin is of the Hip Hop group Slum Village...Then there is a problem. This man had an impeccable style, ridiculous flow and beautiful spirit. Today marks one year since his passing and Hip Hop lovers all over the world are sending him praises. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and there he met two other dudes from around the way, T3 and J Dilla, and created one of the greatest Hip Hop groups of all times. Being that I was just in Detroit last weekend and I was able to get a feel for the city that I always had so much respect and love for, musically, it was only right that I pay tribute to this great man.

We miss you, Baatin! We will continue to RAISE IT UP! Peace and ♥

P.S. Slum Village just released their new album, Villa Manifesto, last Tuesday which includes material from T3, Dilla, Baatin and Elzhi...Simple amazing!

The Color Purple

So there is no coincidence why purple is one of my favorite colors, why the name of this blog is "Inna Leigh's out of Her Mind and in Purpleskyyys" and why the movie The Color Purple is one of my favorite movies (lol)....Well, its a color that is just so powerful to me. It has various meanings; it can mean royalty, it is the last color of the color spectrum and represents the crown chakra.......But to me, its just a color of freedom, love and all good and positive things wrapped into one.

I came across this awesome National Geographics article last night called Life in Color: Purple. This article shows pictures from different places all over the world that have a hint of purple in them; they are simply amazing. The picture above was taken in Tasmania on an ancient bridge built in the early 1800s.....Cool right? There are more purple pic included on the link below.

Flying Lotus is one peculiar artist, but in a very magical and artistic way. I just came across his new video for his single "Mmmhmm" off of his latest album Cosmogramma that dropped earlier this year. The groove is undeniable. It takes me to a higher level, automatically. The video is like a kaleidoscope of a whole bunch of unearthly things that are weird, but oh so lovely at the same time. The fellow singing on this song is an artist named Thundercat and his vocals just add to the flava of the flow. Flying Lotus has been out for years, and being the nephew of the great John Coltrane just adds to his musical genius. His music is a mix of jazz, r&b, techno mixed all together into one......And it is simply amazing!

Inspiration....

Recently, I have been on hiatus....Doing a little soul-searching and finding out more about myself and my creative side. And through this, I found that art, which has always been inspiring to me, is something that I absolutely love. I came across a great artist named Regina Agu a couple of weeks ago and her art is truly one-of-a-kind. It is a breath of fresh air and it is very whimsical and dreamy in my opinion. One of her pieces that directly inspired me is the one to the left of this post (click to enlarge).

As soon as I saw this simple drawing of a young man floating into air...I was in love. It is something very free and happy about this drawing. Don't we all wish that we could just dance around and do whatever we want at times without being judged or looked at in a weird way? Well I know that I do....And to make a long story short, after seeing this I was inspired to create a short story about a young boy based off of this picture. This is the first time that I have EVER written a short story, but why not try something different to see where it leads you right?

Prettiest thing EVER...

So it was love at first sight when I laid my eyes on this beautiful purse. And you might ask, who this purse belongs to...no one but the 1 and only, Kelis. At her album release party in NYC on Wednesday, she rocked this stone-studded pocketbook that matched her dress perfectly. I am SO feeling this bag and I really would love to have it (I already know it costs a fortune, but there is nothing wrong with admiration). She has not announced who created this purse or her lovely dress, hopefully she will tell because it is bangin'.

I hope you all enjoy looking at it as much as I do. And I must say that Kelis indeed looked like "The Boss" that she is on this night that was dedicated to her. Go, Kelis! Love ya 4eva!

Harvey Fuqua, singer, songwriter, producer and mentor to the incredible Marvin Gaye passed away July 6, 2010 at the age of 80. Fuqua was a member and the lead singer of the legendary R&B/Doo Wop group, The Moonglows. They were a big hit during the wave of rock-n-roll that was rockin' America in the 1950s, with hit songs such as "Sincerely" and "See Saw". In the late 1960s, he became an executive at Motown Records in their Artist Development sect at the request of Berry Gordy. There, he made musical magic with many of the great artists that were a part of this label such as, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrel, Junior Walker, The Marvelettes and many more.

Not only did he groom artists like The Supremes, The Temptations, Junior Walker and the All Stars and The Four Tops, he produced songs like "Sexual Healing" for Marvin Gaye and "You Make Me Feel" by Sylvester. Fuqua truly does not get all of the respect and props that he deserves for how he built up what we would call the music business for African American entertainers. We salute you Harvey Fuqua and your work will always be appreciated.

So the day has finally arrived. It has been a long time coming for us Outkast fans who have been waiting for one half of the group to come out with a mixtape or even one unofficial single. But the buzz of Big Boi dropping a new album got his fans excited months ago, and we knew that he wouldn't let us down with this one.

Today Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty has officially been released and I am so excited. After listening to a couple of the leaked songs (ooops :-) on the internet weeks ago and viewing his video for his first single off of the album, Shutterbug, I knew that this album would be classic material. With Big, you can always expect him to incorporate a funky, out of this world type of sound to his music....while still having that dirty south hip-hop twang to it. And this album is just that and more! I am so excited that week after week many Hip Hop albums have been dropping this summer, and Big Boi is just putting icing on the cake with this one.

BBC has unveiled their new low-top sneaker for their Fall/Winter 2010 collection and I must admit that I would cop these if I was a dude. I really love them because they are simple, canvas shoes....But they are still very different in their own way. You could rock these with almost anything; they would give your average outfit a dope/street feel. They kind of remind me of shoes that you would see people in California wear or maybe its just me lol.

Anyways, I think they are hot. And mostly anything that Pharrell Williams is rocking will sell to the masses. Its great to see him modeling again, lookin' hot and fly as ever.

A weekend of great surprises...

It is indeed the end of the week guys and you know what that means, WEEKEND TIME! Plus, the fourth of July will be on Sunday so there will be many things going on ALL over the U.S. Although July 4th isn't much of a day to celebrate to me, it is a time that you are able to cookout, relax and be with family and friends. Also, my sister's birthday and a couple other family members birthdays land within this week so I have alot to be excited about.
